SOUTH AFRICAN MUSIC AWARDS i'm very happy to announce that tutu puoane's album 'quiet now' has been nominated for a South African Music Award in the category Best Jazz Album. this is a major sign of recognition in her home country, and i know i'm pretty much unable to be objective, but i think it's well deserved. we'll be attending the awards gala on april 17th in sun city, south africa. looking forward!!
recently we recorded with tuesday night orchestra in fattoria musica, osnabruck (germany). we took a bunch of compositions of ao bobby jaspar and rené thomas and asked swiss saxophone player and arranger francois de ribaupierre to rework them for our band. to be released soon!
mama africa! the new brussels jazz orchestra album featuring tutu puoane is out now. there's an arrangement of mine included, called 'west wind', based on a south african original. the album will be presented this upcoming friday february 26th @ roma, borgerhout. the project will tour extensively in the near future, for dates please visit www.brusselsjazzorchestra.com.
arranging...
recently i was invited to write my first real bigband arrangement by the brussels jazz orchestra, for their project featuring tutu puoane. i had to rework a piece called 'west wind', which was originally sung by a.o. miriam makeba and nina simone. i just heard the mix of the recording and have to say i'm quite proud :-). it seems i've been bitten by the arranging bug : i'm also about to finish a bigband version of one of my own tunes, called 'blow'. looking forward to trying it out with the tuesday night orchestra.
if anybody needs some arranging work done for smaller or larger jazz ensembles : i'm cheap and eager to experiment... :-)

some additional news : the first album 'song' is now released in a special edition in japan (with two bonustracks and a brandnew lay-out), and 'quiet now' will follow soon - including liner notes of a VERY special someone...

i've been writing songs for a few years now, and finally we (tutu and me) found a great lyricist to put words on the music... her name is suzie scragg. she wrote lyrics for some great bert joris tunes for example (like 'for the time being' and 'atonal', a.o.) and i'm so happy she's wanting to 'tackle' my repertoire. she already came up with beautiful stuff for some of my songs. check out tutu's new music! dates as usual in the 'gigs'-section :-)
