me

if you're looking for the plain facts of my (musical) life, like where i was born, who i was taught by and whom i've played with so far, in short anything that rules under 'biography' : please go the the 'stuff'-section of this website. you'll find my 'official' biography under 'documents'.

i'm having some different plans for this spot.

i'm gonna talk about some of my general likes and dislikes. here we go, fasten those seatbelts :

LIKES :

my girlfriend, my beautiful beautiful baby daughter (see for urself on the pic --> :-)), food, wine, cooking for me and my love, experiments in the kitchen, driving in between rush hours, my car, cars in general, soccer, bach, beethoven, satie, browsing around on myspace, playing with people i like to play with, beyoncé and her behind, ronaldinho, snatch, lock, stock and two smoking barrels, friends (also the tv show), taking long hot showers, sting (and the police), fresh brown bread, the sun, the smell of rain after a dry/hot period, hanging with friends @ the hopper, a good piece of tasty meat, people who know how to tell jokes, homer simpson, meeting people who grab me from the first second, paris, captivating eyes, wayne shorter, herbie hancock, charlie haden, miles and keith, conan o'brien's hair (not his jokes), south africa, sunset in capetown, flying to some place nice, me'shell ndegeocello, spices, thai green curry, basil, penne all'arrabiata made right, verbena tea, teaching, full moon, pulp fiction, samuel jackson, my good old G4 powerbook, mussels, seeing my girlfriend change into a wonderful mom from one day to another, roy haynes, phineas newborn, sonny clark, hank jones, kenny kirkland, belgium and french speaking belgians, frank sinatra, ...

DISLIKES :

vlaams belang, people being unreasonable, bad driving skills, the sound of a flute (except when it's played by yusef lateef), dr. phil, adds on tv, predictability of politics, paying too many taxes, getting a bad bottle of wine from the organisation after a concert, having to pay for a cup of coffee in the backstage artists bar in dutch theatres, waiting for my girlfriends residence permit to be extended, prices in delhaize, people talking when i'm playing and later asking for an encore, paris hilton, doping in cycling, intolerance in whatever context, a steinway concert grand in mint condition standing in a concert hall and the organisation wanting me to play on a little yamaha C3, incompetent self-baptised music journalists writing bad reviews about good musicians and good music (mostly to serve their own egos instead of serving the music), flanders stickers on some people's license plates, jean-marie dedecker (and generally all people behaving in a ridiculous manner in desperate need of attention), SOS piet (man, would i love to see the 'in de gloria'-crowd doing something with that one :-)), our current prime minister, fortis and the financial crisis, ...

tutu puoane quartet

tutu's a living example of what people from other colours, continents and cultures can bring to our (sometimes way too pale) world. voices and characters like hers aren't made at this side of the globe. her band is working and growing, and the first album is out now. look out for it in your local record store!!

tutu puoane - voice
ewout pierreux - piano
guus bakker - double bass/electric bass
jasper van hulten - drums

tom van dyck's a strong saxophone player with a very personal style of writing and playing. he's got an original approach towards harmony and rhythm, close to tradition but recognizably his own. a challenging project with seven interesting voices, and i'm glad to be a part of it. cu at one of our concerts!

tom van dyck - alto sax/baritone sax/flute
fred delplancq - tenor sax
michel paré - trumpet
peter delannoye - trombone
ewout pierreux - piano/rhodes

peer baierlein quartet

the 'peer baierlein quartet' is what used to be called 'jazzisfaction', the longest standing jazz band i've been involved with, due to the ever lasting energy of our german (but belgium based) trumpet player peer baierlein. we've been playing for over ten years now, recorded two cd's, had ups and downs and a lot of issues... we played a lot in the past years, maybe even too much, but lately our meetings have become more rare and more spontaneous and more beautiful than before. come see us, you won't regret.

davide petrocca - bass
yves peeters - drums

tno is a young big band project founded some three years ago. i joined the band in 2006 and after a long period of reading through the history of count basie, sammy nestico, thad jones, we seem to be finding our own direction, thanks to arrangements and compositions of wietse meys, francois de ribaupierre and tom van dyck. the only thing we still need is regular rehearsing, which is not easy with a band this size... the first cd is out now : 'band of birds'. look out for it in your local record store!

my latest project and immediately the most ambitious one : i'm hoping this band can let my music grow into something really special. very happy with the first signs of evolution and looking forward to the future. think this might be the line-up of my first album :-) i just need to write some more music, which is about to happen real soon... if you're organising jazz concerts : book this band now we're still affordable. just kidding... but do book us.
